Call for Applications Online Course 2025-2026:

“Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age: Palaeography, Edition, Cataloguing”

The École Pratique des Hautes Études within Paris Sciences Lettres University, is inviting applications from French and international research students for an online course cluster “Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age: Palaeography, Edition, Cataloguing”. The course cluster can be validated as an EPHE diploma or be an audited addition to the degree the students undertake elsewhere. Its aim is to provide the participants with traditional and digital skills and some understanding of computational possibilities in Hebrew Manuscript Studies.

 “Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age: Palaeography, Edition, Cataloguing” will introduce the students to the current research methods and provide them will necessary basic skills to undertake a research project on medieval Hebrew manuscripts.

The course is held entirely online, in English. Lectures are followed by discussions.

In addition to the online seminars, students are encouraged to acquire practical skills by contributing to one or more of the digital projects:

The teaching consists of three one hour seminars a week between November 17th 2025, and June 3rd 2026 (excluding EPHE holidays)

  • Monday 6 pm – 7 pm (Paris time)

Introduction to Medieval Hebrew Palaeography: typology and dating of manuscripts with the help of traditional methods and digital tools

  • Wednesday 5 pm – 6 pm (Paris time)

From automatic transcription to digital scholarly edition

  • Monday 7.15 pm – 8.15 pm (Paris time)

Cataloguing of medieval Hebrew manuscripts: codicology, fragmentology, scientific approach to book materials, online cataloguing

The course is open to:

  • Students of Master and Doctorate of the EPHE
  • French and International students in Hebrew and/or Jewish Studies accepted by the project and the EPHE to prepare a graduate diploma of the EPHE
  • French and International students accepted by the project and the EPHE to audit the course

Postdoctoral research associate position in Medieval Hebrew Palaeography-HMDA

The École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL-University in Paris, France, is hiring one postdoctoral research associate in Hebrew Palaeography. The successful candidate will join the team led by Professor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger in the framework of the project Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age directed by Judith Olszowy-Schlanger and Daniel Stökl Ben Ezra.  

Working closely with Judith Olszowy-Schlanger and the other team members, the selected postdoctoral research associate will be responsible for annotating palaeographical samples of Medieval Hebrew manuscripts for the online Hebrew Palaeography Album (HebrewPal).

Position : Full-time postdoctoral research associate (35h/week)

Employer : Paris, France : Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, PSL, Section des Sciences Historiques et Philologiques. The postdoctoral research associate will be also affiliated with the research cluster EA 4116 – SAPRAT-Savoirs et pratiques du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine.

Place of employment : EPHE, PSL, Condorcet Campus, Paris, France.

Length of the contract : 1 year with possibility of extending for 1 additional year.

Start date : 1 October 2024

Essential qualifications :

  • Doctorate in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, with specialisation in medieval history, manuscripts, art history or book history

The École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL-University in Paris, France, is inviting candidates for a Research Assistant on the doctoral (Ingénieur d’études) or Postdoctoral (Ingénieur de recherche) level for participating in the work on digital editions of Tannaitic Rabbinic texts, in particular Sifra. The position is opened in the framework of the Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age projectat the team of Professor Daniel Stökl-Ben Ezra in conjunction with Prof. Judith Olszowy-Schlanger (EPHE, PSL) and Prof. Hayim Lapin (University of Maryland).

Candidates should present good command of Rabbinic Hebrew, Medieval Hebrew manuscripts and Tannaitic literature in general and acquaintance with Geniza manuscripts in order to participate in the creation of a digital editions of Tannaitic texts. For examples of preliminary editions see http://www.erabbinica.org/.

Skills in digital humanities, data structuring (SQL, XML, TEI), python, html, are a plus. Work will consist finalizing the data for the publication, the correction and improvement of textual alignments, transcriptions, intertextuality, linguistic annotation, conceptualization of the visualizations and of an edition platform.

There will be close interaction with the team working on the ERC Synergy grant MiDRASH (Migrations of Textual and Scribal Traditions via Large-Scale Computational Analysis). It is possible to apply for less than a full position and to divide up tasks between two half positions or to apply jointly to one of the open positions in the MiDRASH team and work half in both projects but for one year only.

Place: Paris, France. The researcher will benefit from shared office space at the Campus Condorcet. We expect a presence of at least two days per week in the shared offic.

Interview date: 2nd half of July 2025 or August

Starting date of the contract: 1 September or 1 October or 1 November 2025

Length of the contract: Until September 2026.

Call for Applications : Two Doctoral Research Contracts in Medieval Hebrew Palaeography

The École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL-University in Paris, France, is inviting candidates for two Doctoral scholarships in the field of Hebrew Palaeography and Manuscript Studies. The successful candidates will prepare their doctorate at the EPHE, PSL, under the supervision of Professor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger and will join the team led by her in the framework of the ERC Synergy project MiDRASH (Migrations of Textual and Scribal Traditions via Large-Scale Computational Analysis of Medieval Manuscripts in Hebrew Script).

We invite specific doctoral proposals on individual topics within the following broader fields:

 Paléographie 1: “Medieval Hebrew Liturgical Manuscripts: Between France and Germany”

Paléographie 2: “The Mishnah and its Commentaries: Codicology, Palaeography and Book History”  

Founded in 1868, EPHE, PSL is a leading French institute of advanced studies. Its Humanities’ sections include ancient and medieval Jewish Studies and Hebrew palaeography and codicology. ERC-Synergy programme MiDRASH is composed of four teams led respectively by Daniel Stökl Ben Ezra (EPHE, PSL), Judith Olszowy-Schlanger (EPHE, PSL/Oxford), Nachum Dershowitz (Tel Aviv-University), Avi Shmidman (Bar Ilan University), in collaboration with the National Library of Israel and Haifa University. Its overall aim is to advance our understanding of the literary, textual and manuscript production processes in Ancient and Medieval Judaism by applying computational methods to transcribe and analyse thousands of medieval Hebrew manuscripts. The selected doctoral research students will work on an original research topic towards their doctoral dissertation for 80% and participate in annotating palaeographical samples of Medieval Hebrew manuscripts for the online Hebrew Palaeography Album (HebrewPal) (https://www.hebrewpalaeography.com/) for 20% of their time. They will attend one weekly research seminar and coorganize/participate in an annual conference of students in Hebrew Manuscript Studies at the EPHE.

University : The students will prepare their doctorate at the prestigious Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, PSL, Paris, France, in the Section des Sciences Historiques et Philologiques. In addition, they will be affiliated with the research cluster EA 4116 – SAPRAT-Savoirs et pratiques du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine (https://www.saprat.fr/).

Length : 3 years with the possibility of extending for further 8 months in Year 4.

Place : The students will benefit from shared MiDRASH office space at the Campus Condorcet. They are expected to be physically present in the office for at least one day a week.

The study and edition of manuscripts is indispensable for this sources-oriented historical and literary research.

The aim of “Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age: Palaeography, Edition, Cataloguing” (short: HMDA) is to create a unique academic research and online teaching programme in Hebrew Palaeography and Manuscript Studies, combining traditional codicology, palaeography and bibliography with the achievements in Digital Humanities and Artificial Intelligence.
It is organized by the École Pratique des Hautes Études, the ‘school of advanced studies’ within Paris Sciences Lettres University starting in fall 2022.
